Imam W. Deen Mohammed Islamic Center was started in 2012 by Imam Saleem El-Amin and Imam Dirul Islam as an extension of Sultan Mohammed Islamic Center, formerly known as Mosque No. 3.
Mosque No. 3 in Milwaukee was established in the late 1960s to early 1970s as part of the national expansion of the Nation of Islam (NOI), which created numbered temples (mosques) in major Black urban centers across the United States.
After the death of Elijah Muhammad in 1975, the movement underwent a major transformation under Warith Deen Mohammed, shifting toward orthodox Islam. As part of this transition, Mosque No. 3 became Masjid Sultan Muhammad.
